Stanton Leads Owls over Furman

HOUSTON, TX (Tudor Fieldhouse) -- Trey Stanton scored a career-high 23 points Tuesday night (and pulled down nine rebounds) to help lead the Rice Owls to a very, very solid 77 to 65 victory over the Furman Paladins in front of an announced crowd of 1,791 fans inside the House of Tudor.

"I'm glad to see Trey step up," said Owls head coach Ben Braun after the game. "He had a good week of practice. He outran people. He outbattled them on the boards. He was very strong with the ball. He defended pretty well. I really thought a big key to the game was that he give us the type of game that he gave us."

The Owls used a 12 to 4 run in the first half to lead the Paladins 33 to 16 at the 5:26 mark of the opening 20 minutes; however, Furman (3-1) trimmed the Owls lead to just nine points (39 to 30) at halftime.

"I always try to play defense first," Stanton said. "If I good defense, if I get defensive rebounds, if I start really getting after it (on defense), then offense kind of take place."

Stanton (9 for 15 from the field, 4 for 5 from the foul line) scored three of the Owls first five points in the second half; however, Furman outscored the Owls 9 to 5 to pull within five points (44 to 39) with 16:14 on the game clock.

Owls' junior forward Suleiman Braimoh drained and jump shot and finished off a fast break with a dunk to kick start a 21 to 6 run to give the Owls a 20-point lead and put the game away.

Braimoh finished the game with eight points (4 for 6 from the field) and seven rebounds in just 14 minutes of action. Braimoh and teammate Arsalan Kazemi (6'7" freshman, nine boards in just 17 minutes) helped the Owls outrebound the Paladins 35 to 28.

"I thought that both of those guys, defensively, they really came up big," Coach Braun said after the game. "They helped us. They made it tough on Furman to score inside up and over. They defended on the ball really well. They really got to the glass with seven and nine rebounds. Those guys are getting a rebound every two minutes; so, I think those are good stats. If they can continue to do that for our team; boy that's a great stat for us."

The Owls committed just nine turnovers in the ball game and connected on 52.7% (29 for 55) from the field.

Next up for the Owls (4-1) is a Sunday afternoon home matchup with the number three ranked Texas Longhorns. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
